This folk tale is about two life style. The scholar’s life style is that intellectual matters is important. So he like arts and philosophy; moreover, he devoted himself to thinking. The boatman’s life style is that the useful knowledge is important. Such as swimming. In the end of the folk take, the boat is sinking; moreover, maybe the boatman can survive by swimming. In my opinion, the scholar sometime could be true; however, not every time. Such as the end of the folk tale, the boatman is true. So, my idea is that we need to learn about intellectual matters; however, we also need to learn about practical matters. If we lose one of these, our life may have some trouble. I have some example of this opinion. Fist is about university students. Now a day, many student in the university like to study some useful major, such as accounting. It look easy to found job after graduation; however, if they want a promotion, they need to improve their temperament. Learn some arts or philosophy can help for this. The second example is about myself. I’m interested in culture that can make me think a lot of things. So, when I am in the college, I read many books about culture and think a lot of things. Nevertheless, when I did my summer work, I found that I can’t do many things about the work. Then I true to learn something about business; in addition, I can do much better than before. For these reasons, I think that both two ideas are important for people’s life. People can’t work with out practical matters. But they also need intellectual matters for themselves to improve their temperament. If people can learn all of these two things, they may have a wonderful life.

The allegory told us that different life experience has different value. once a scholar asked one boatmen to row him across the river. He had good knowledge base, in addition, he was good at thinking about the philosophy problem. He speak in contempt and asked the boatman about the philosophy learning. The boatman had a big number of boating experience. And philosophy was not useful in his daily life. The scholar sad that boatman wasted his life. But one accident happen, the boat was sinking, The boatman asked the scholar if he had the swimming skill. But the answer was not. The scholar lost his life. The message told us that everyone has their own skilled in. Despising others is really bad behavior. I agree with the message. For example, when I was in high school, one of my school mate was not good at test, some of my classmates made jock about him. After high school he invented one cleaner robot, in addition, he sell it to one high-tech company and made a lot of money. My classmates were all amazing about it. It is necessary to think impersonality. Other people would have amazing life by the way different between you and themselves.
The folk story tell us about two men’s different idea about which is more important in life. The scholar thinks mind is more important. For example, philosophy or art are the most important things in our life. In contrast, the boatman perceives that practical skills are more important. Such as, know how to swim. Now I want to state my stance, I support boatman. Us me as an example. When I was a freshmen student, I was like that scholar think the most important thing is our spirit and minds. Bur few days later I found that really ridiculers, because, before you want to think or consider about your knowledge, you have to learn how to living in the society, like take care yourself. Then you can think about how to increase your knowledge. A second example is how students spend their leisure time. Some people think leisure time that means you can waste your time. But I think, even your leisure time you still can use that, like multitask. That would help you after you graduate. To sum up, life is not have to choose which part you have to support. People not only can enjoy their life, but also can think about practical problems.
ReplyDeleteIn the middle eastern folk, there are two men on a boat. The scholar, one of the men, thinks studying philosophy and art are more important in our life. However, the boat man, the other one of the men, poses his opinion: studying and thinking are useless. This point of view has been proven immediately, the boat cash into a rock and sink, the boat man asks the scholar: “You know how to swim, don’t you?” And the scholar’s answer is “no”. I agree with the boat man’s opinion. Because died people can’t thinking or learning philosophy. Only being alive, we can think about other things, such studying art to improve our life. For example, although the scholar good at thinking, he can’t swim to the river side by thinking. Therefor, I think the boat man’s idea is batter than the scholar’s. In addition, I was suffering from illness for a week and I could not follow the teacher’s step in class. If I practiced swimming, I would lead a healthy life. If I lead a healthy life, I could escape from disease and follow my teacher in my class. Therefor, I think a healthy life is the basic of thinking and studying.
ReplyDeleteThe folk tale was taking about two different kinds of concepts. The first side is the scholar, who though intellectual matters is the most important thing during our life. On the other hand, in the boatman’s opinion, he though practical matters is more significant than others. Unfortunately, in the end of story, the boat was sinking. As a result, owing to knowing how to swim, the boatman survived; however, the scholar didn’t. It seems to me that practical matters are more important than intellectual matters. Therefore, I can’t agree with the boatman’s viewpoint anymore. Take myself for instance, I thought that my major, Economics, is interesting indeed. I would like to study on it. Nevertheless, I was forced to face the music. As a student learned about economics, we researched a lot of theory based on a series of assumptions. However, it can’t help me to find a good job. In contrary, participating in tests and getting the financial license can bring more working opportunities to me. Moreover, having a working experience or an internship during your vacation always can help you to find positions easier. On the other hand, the person without any experience is hard to impress the boss during the interview. Consequently,to sum up those reasons, in my view, learning practical matters is more positive to my life.
ReplyDeleteAccording to folk tale “The Boatman”, scholar and boatman have different opinions about what is important in life. Scholar believed that studied philosophy or art are most important part of life. However boatman though that practical matters are most important part such as how to swim. In the end, the boat is sinking, the boatman can survive because he knows how to swim but, scholar can’t survive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with scholar even though he died because he didn’t know how to swim. Modern days, if people have knowledge about philosophy or art, they can survive easily because, this day is not prehistoric times ; therefore, practical matters is not too much important. In “The Boatman” case is very rare case. If people can’t swim, rescue workers can help people when they are in dangerous situations. However, if people don’t know about philosophy or art, they can’t survive in society competitions. People will ignore you because, they think that you are not intelligent. For example, when i was college student, in class, professor wanted to debate with classmates but i don’t know about imformations about topic. Therefore, many people ignored me. On the other hand, usually people don’t ignore because you don’t know how to swim.
The folk tale tells us about two men who have different minds about what is important in life. The scholar thinks studying, devoting yourself to only thinking are your savior. However; according to boatman what is important in life is knowing practical things. So at the last, the luckier one is boatman during sinking since he knows how to swim.
ReplyDeleteI agree with boatman. Because learning some things practically can be helpful in your life. Only if you devote yourself to thinking or studying, when you face to a situation that requires you to do some things physically, you don’t only know how to do it but also what to do. For example, there was a TV show called “A Young Doctor’s Notebook”. Daniel Radcliffe was acting as a Doctor who usually focused on informative things in books during his university life. Obviously he read many books and studied hard but when it came to going to a small town and starting his job, at the beginning he was kind of nervous and desperate. Moreover, he still tried to find out the solution in the books. Because he didn’t have any practical skills. Therefore, he found himself in a complicated situation. However, if he had tried to do things he was taught in the book practically he would have been satisfied by doing his job properly.
I don’t mean you have to have to have only practical information However, you can win in life by knowing what to do physically and sometimes it is what you are only supposed to do.
Response to the folk tale
ReplyDeleteThis article is about a conversation between a scholar and a boatman. The scholar emphasized the importance of philosophy and art, but the boatman, on the other hand, considered swimming as a necessary ability. At the end, the boat sank, the scholar, who couldn’t swim, died.
Using an ironic ending, this folk tale makes us to evaluate which is more important in life, to be practical or to be theoretical? In my opinion, it’s hard to decide. By way of illustration, I’d like to refer to my own experience. Before I went to collage I can play many musical instruments, just as an amateur, I had lots of practical experiences. But after my study in collage, I’ve realized the importance of music theories. It helped me to develop my ability to play instruments better and made my practices more systematic. At the same time my practical experiences made theories easier for me to understand. Being practical and being theoretical were equally important for me during that time.
To be concluded, practice and theory are both important to me, the point is that, we should learn to use them differently in different situations. The simple emphasis of practice or theory would cause sad result as the scholar’s in this folk tale.
The story told about two types of people’s think. The scholar maintained that people need to study, and spend time for philosophy or arts. However, the boat man counter argued that he had no time for that, he needed to spend time for laboring, and job such as benefit works for him. The boat crashed into rock, the boat man can live longer than the scholar.
ReplyDeleteI think I firmly agree with the scholar’s idea which is spending time for what he wanted to do. What if the boat man studied philosophy or arts before learning swimming, getting job? His job would be changed to what he would enjoy and interested in. Thus, he would enjoyed while he works. Also, doing what people want to do is important, and can get better result than not enjoying. I saw a result of experiments that university had survey to people who work with satisfaction or not in their works. It revealed that many of them who satisfy their works are great effects to company. Another example is my experience. I like playing soccer since eight years old, and I can say I am good at soccer than any other sports. This is because I enjoy playing soccer. In addition, playing soccer for 90 minutes is so tired. However, for me, I’ve never stopped running while playing, because of enjoying.
Thus, I strongly agree with the scholar’s statement that people need to spend time for what they want to do.
