Core Homework- Write Professor Sollenberger a formal email about the problem on your paper & post it on the blog. (Use the skills and vocabulary from today's class.)

3/23- Homework Assignments

EAP- Use the pictures of the reading below to activities A.- C. on the handout of page 19 from Inside Writing 2. Answer the questions from activity C. on the back of the paper.

Upper Core- Answer the MAIN Idea & Details questions in Q:RW$- pages 188-189. 

3/22- Homework Assignment

EAP- Answer the True/False questions on your handout using the pictures of the reading below. (Remember: if it's false make it true &  include the line number where you found the answer.)

Core- Write a 2-3 paragraph story about a time you were surprised or interested in something on the blog.  

Remember to tell us: 

• Where were you?
• Who was with you?
• What happened in order?
• How did you feel?
• Why?

1 RULE: CAN’T SAY SURPRISED OR INTERESTED. 
Then you must comment on 1 other person's post. 

3/18- Weekend Homework

EAP- Prepare & deliver a 5-7 minute presentation with PowerPoint (PPT)about environmental pollution.
Choose one type of environmental pollution such as:

1. Air- smoking smog
2. Water- ocean acidification, lead in drinking water
3. Land- soil erosion, toxic waste

Research to learn about this pollution. In your presentation, describe:

• the problem
• where it occurs
• the impact on people, animals, plants and/or the environment
• 2 solutions to the problem 
• your opinion of the best solution w/ why (remember your opinion stems from Thursday)

* there should be 1 slide for each point + and introduction, summary & conclusion slide.

*** Remember to open the floor to questions & check that you understand the question before answering it!!! (it's good to have 1 question & answer ready before the presentation) 

Upper Core- Study Q:LS4 & Q:RW4 Unit 7 (Review on vocabulary & all skills).

EAP- Answer questions 1-3 from the picture below on the blog. Use your opinion stems to answer each. Questions 1 & 2 need 2-3 sentences each, but question 3 needs a full paragraph. Please read the instructions on the photo carefully.

Skills Core- Type a final draft of your paper we edited today in class due TOMORROW! It must be properly formatted (name, date, class:core, 12 pt, Times new roman font, double spaced)

EAP- Use your notes from today's reading to answer the questions below. (Each in paragraph form 5-8 sentences) DUE TOMORROW

1. How do you feel about smoking outdoors? Do you think it is a problem? Why or Why not? 
2. Do you think that smoking increases the general air pollution in a city? Why of why noy? Will banning outdoor smoking help a city's environment? 

Core- Write a 250 word article about the murder from your handout. (It's a rough draft so hand written or typed are both ok). Remember to include: DUE THURSDAY

• Interesting title
• Introduction- tell us the topic & why it is interesting
• Body- what happened in more detail
• Conclusion- summarize topic & give your opinion

2. What are some careers that would work well in each model? Which model is most common in your home country? Is that similar or different to the US? Give specific reason's for your choices.

EAP- Use 6-8 of your new words from today to answer the questions below about the reading (5-8 sentences each).

1. Now that you have read the article would you like to live in an underground house? Why or why not?
2. Why do you think the miners prefer to live in these 'dug-out' homes?
3. If I were traveling to Australia's outback for vacation how would you describe Coober Pedy to me?

Core- Summarize your story, tell what you learned from the story and why it is an important lesson in a 2-3 paragraph blog post. 

3/4- Weekend Homework Assignments

EAP- Using the handout I gave you in class create a 3-5 minute presentation about a popular dish from your city or region.

• It must include:
• All of the information from the handout
• A power point presentation with 3-9 slides
• A summary of the main points at the end of your presentation 

Upper Core- Finish the final draft of your cause-effect research paper due to Lauren after lunch on Monday 3/7. Study for your Q4 unit 6 test on Monday.

Core- Use 6-12 of the idioms from today's class as you can to give your opinion on the following situation: (write it in sentences in your notebook for a debate on Thursday 3/3)- speaking, homework & participation score.

• Your friend is in her second year at college and is trying to decide what to choose as her major course of study. She wants to be a writer, and in fact has already won several awards for her poetry. Her parents would like her to become a teacher so that she at least will have a steady income after graduation. 
• Give your opinion on the following and remember to use the idioms from the chapter:
• your friend's position
• her parent's position 
• the advantages and disadvantages of writing full time
• how her parents might feel if she signed a lucrative contract with a major publishing company
• what, if anything, she could do to please her parents as well as herself
