2/29- Homework Assignments

Upper Core- Due tomorrow

  1. Finish the 2 activities (Ate the Hospital & At School) on your handout and then write each in paragraph form on the back of the paper. 
  2. Finish the cause/effect paper outline on page 153 of Q:RW4
  3. Write a 5-7 resource work cited page with resources for your paper. 

EAP- You are going to write a 3 paragraph blog post for a student website about your illness due Wednesday 3/2. Use your handout and the picture below.

  2. Answer the following question on the blog. Support your opinion with examples of both good and bad effects of science on food, as well as a quote from each unit 6 reading. (2-3 paragraph blog post).

2/25- Homework Assignment

EAP- Use the information in the pictures from Reading 2 below as a starting point for a flow chart. In your notebooks, describe one of these things:
  • what happens following a bite by a bedbug
  • What happens following the bite of a venomous spider
To expand your your chart, do some outside research on the process you choose.

Core- Explain which case study you chose and why. Next, answer all of the questions below your case study on the blog. (I want 2 paragraphs, 5-8 sentences each)

2/24- Homework Assignments

EAP- Research a common illness and write a 2-3 paragraph blog post. The post must include:
  • Definition if the illness (use one of the ways we practiced today)
  • Causes- how do you get it?
  • Symptoms- how do you know you have it?
  • Ways to prevent getting it.
  • Treatments- how to get better.
Upper Core- Answer question 2 from page 138 in 1-2 paragraphs on the blog. 
  • 2) Look again at Michael Pollan's tips for eating well in paragraphs 5-7 of Reading 1. Then describe the last three meals you have eaten and explain:
    • Do you think you eat well?
    • If yes, which of Pollan's tips are you following?
    • If no, what do you need to do differently?

2/19- Weekend homework assignments

EAP- Present the results of your survey to the class in a 5-7 minute presentation with PowerPoint. Your presentation must include:
  • Your survey topic and what you wanted to learn.
  • The questions you asked
  • The results of each question 
  • The results of the survey & what you learned from the results.
  • Presentation skills: Catch the audiences' attention at the beginning & develop a rapport with the audience.
Upper core- Review Q:RW4 & Q:LS4 unit 5 (vocabulary, skills & grammar) for the unit test on Monday 2/22. Also review the Q:LS Unit assignment for the art gallery role-play (see below for re-cap).

This is from last Friday:

Use your classmates' notes from activity B.1. on page 105 to write 5 questions for each of them (Review speaking skill- asking open-ended questions on pages 80-81 to help with forming the questions)
    • You will then do a role play: a group of people discussing the painting and questions from page 104 as well as each of the questions you have created for each other.
      • Remember: Cliff is the artist so you want to practice politely avoiding answering questions. 
    • will count as your speaking score for the week and for the unit test.
CORE- Do grammar activities 19-21 on the handout today.

All Level Core- Finish filling out fact and opinion form (both sides- 1 side for Nicole & 1 for David) then summarize the facts and write your opinion in 5-8 sentences at the bottom of both. Due in class tomorrow for warmer discussion.

  1. What are 2 reactions that people have to the increased feeling of busyness? Which reaction do you usually have? Give and example.
  2. What is one example of how people multitask during leisure time? Do you usually multitask in your leisure time? Why or why not? Give and example.
  3. What is one example of a no-brainer leisure activity? Do you prefer to multitask or do no-brainer activities in your leisure time? Why? Give an example.
  4. Why do some people become couch potatoes? Do you? Why or Why not? Give and example.

2/12- Weekend Homework Assignments

EAP- Finish all activities on the printout of 125, then write a rough draft of your personal statement for applying to your major at SUNY Oswego.

  • Use the REVISE & EDIT activities on page 126 of the print out to help you. 
  • The rough draft is due on Wednesday 2/17 and we will edit id in class.

Core- Use your notes about 'Is it possible to be too clean?' and summarize the facts & give your opinion, with reasons why. (Do all this ob your handout) DUE ON 2/17.

EAP- Using the materials from the email I sent you (IW2 p114-117):
  • Complete activity C. on page 117 on your notebooks 
  • Re-write the concluding paragraph on page 115 by including the sentences you chose from activity A on page 117. (Also in your notebooks)

2/8 Homework Assignments

EAP- None

Upper Core- Q:RW4 unit 5 writing assignment due Friday 2/12 after lunch.

  • Assignment- Write a 2-3 page research paper to compare & contrast 2 artists, performers or works of art.
    1. You paper must be typed and properly formatted (times new roman, 12pt, double spaced, page numbers, heading, ect.).
    2. You need to have a work cited page in MLA format with 5-7 resources.
    3. You will need at least 2 references to your resources in your paper. 
    4. Use the outline on page 127, the handout from class & the writing skill on pages 121-123 of Q:RW4 to help structure your paper.
    5. Use the self-assessment checklist on page 128 to make sure you completely fulfill the assignment and to help edit for your final draft.  
Due tomorrow 2/9- Work cited page and  #4 from the list above.

    • If you think these people are satisfied with work in their country (work/life balance)

  2. Then draw your graph about 2 parts of your daily life
  3. Then write 10-15 sentences describing your graph.
